Cathy Lui, a young doctor who had just started her first year of residency at U.C. Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, suffered a disabling brain injury when she was struck by a car while in a cross-walk located in a “S” curve on Freeport Boulevard in Sacramento, California.
After finding out that her head trauma could potentially end her career as a doctor, Liu filed a personal injury lawsuit against the City of Sacramento, alleging that the curve impaired the ability for drivers to see the cross-walk and the pedestrians walking in it. The jury agreed, and assigned 51 percent of the blame to the City of Sacramento, as well as awarded Liu $18 million. Although, the original award was $18 million there was already an agreement that the damages would not exceed $6 million.
