Steven G. Perry is a Partner at The Law Offices of Todd M. Friedman, P.C., where he leads its scientific research and product labeling investigations. Mr. Perry built, developed, and now oversees the firm’s analytical laboratory, a unique component of the firm’s consumer protection practice that provides scientific capabilities rarely found within a plaintiffs’ law firm. The firm’s laboratory investigates a wide range of consumer products and scientifically complex claims. These investigations have involved foods and beverages, dietary supplements, vitamins, protein powders, infant and baby products, pharmaceuticals, over-the-counter medications, cosmetics, skin care products, lotions, moisturizers, sunscreens, shampoos, conditioners, soaps, toothpaste, eye drops, household cleaners, laundry products, pet foods, pet treats, consumer plastics, textiles, clothing, electronics, and many other products sold to consumers.
Mr. Perry’s investigations focus on determining whether products actually contain what they claim to contain, and whether they perform the way they are advertised. The firm’s research has involved claims that products were marketed as “All Natural,” “No Artificial Ingredients,” “No Preservatives,” “Oil-Free,” and other representations that may influence purchasing decisions. The laboratory also investigates undisclosed ingredients, contaminated products, adulterated products, ingredient substitutions, misleading nutritional claims, inaccurate ingredient lists, hidden chemicals, microplastics, toxic substances, heavy metals, and other environmental contaminants, product composition, material identification, and whether products meet the scientific claims made by their manufacturers.
The firm’s laboratory has developed and implemented investigative methods utilizing DNA verification of fish and botanical ingredients, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, bomb calorimetry, spectrometry, nuclear spectroscopy, Nile Red microplastic detection, and other advanced analytical techniques. These capabilities enable the firm to independently investigate product composition, ingredient authenticity, material identification, contamination, product performance, environmental contaminants, and other technical issues that frequently arise in consumer fraud and product litigation.
Following his admission to practice in 2018, Mr. Perry pursued extensive continuing education in chemistry and analytical science, including laboratory instrumentation, experimental design, analytical methodology, and scientific research. His education remains ongoing as he continues to study emerging technologies and investigative methods used to detect consumer and industrial fraud. Mr. Perry received his Juris Doctor from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2018 and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from North Central College in 2015. He is admitted to practice before the Illinois state courts and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
