Sara Lee Recalls Coffee Cakes due to Undeclared Pecans

Categorized Under:

Sara Lee is recalling their  Streusel Coffee Cake due to a common, potentially deadly allergen that they omitted from their ingredient list.

Unfortunately, nuts such as pecans can cause serious and/or life-threatening reactions for people who are allergic to them.  This being said, according to the AAAI, “more than 3 million people in the United States report being allergic to nuts.”

Furthermore, according to the Food and Drug Administration, (FDA) “each year, roughly 30,000 individuals require emergency room treatment and 150
individuals die because of allergic reactions to food.”

The law requires that food labels must clearly identify the names of all ingredients that are or contain any protein derived from the 8 most common food allergens, which are: Milk, Egg, Fish, Shellfish, Treenuts (including walnuts, pecans, almonds), Peanuts, Wheat and Soybeans.

Some symptoms to watch out for are hives, itching, swelling, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, dizziness and loss of consciousness.

The Sara Lee Coffee Cakes have a “best by” date of “Oct. 16, 2013”  and a UPC number 3210002342.
